As of January 1, 2020, all licensed professionals in Illinois are required to complete a 1 CEU hour course in Sexual Harassment Prevention. This does not to include the mandatory annual training that an employer is to conduct for all employees in their practice. The annual employee training must be taken in office and on company time (paid). The 1 CEU hour course taken for your licensure renewal must be an IDFPR approved provider (if you are unsure, please contact IDFPR to verify), and you must obtain and present the completion certificate to IDFPR if asked.

Here is more information about the required Sexual Harassment Prevention Training CE  law from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR):  https://www.idfpr.com/FAQ/DPR/DPR%20Sexual%20harassment%20prevention%20CE.pdf

    COVID-19 Resources

When the economy begins to reopen, and employers begin calling you back to work, IDHA wants to ensure we can all be #HealthyAtWork. Dental hygienists need to have the latest, necessary information regarding PPE and how to be safe in the workplace. As you may know, dental aerosols increase the risk of transmission within the dental office, and more thorough research is pertinent to guide us forward.  Sources of aerosols include (but are not limited to): air/water syringe, ultrasonics, hand scaling, and usage of all handpieces. COVID-19 has been shown to be suspended in aerosols and on surfaces for prolonged periods.  It is our duty to protect our patients from ourselves and from other patients.  Visit here to see the list of the State of Illinois executive orders.  See the recent SIREN notification by Illinois Department of Public Health sent out on April 14 (these will also be posted below).

If you feel that you are working, or are being asked to work, in an unsafe environment due to insufficient or ineffective PPE or aerosol control, the most important first step is to discuss those concerns with your employer. We do know that the previous standard precautions are not effective against this virus, and the bare minimum PPE should include a full face-shield with a disposable N95 maskGoggles are needed for patients, not just safety glasses. Please remember that we took an oath to do no harm.

Below are many resources listed to help you prepare yourself and your team.  If your management still fails to provide a satisfactory solution after sharing resources and recommendations, there are links listed below to report unsafe working conditions.  Please note the current CDC recommendations are to postpone elective procedures, surgeries, and non-urgent dental visits.  “Services should be limited to emergency visits only during this period of the pandemic. These actions help staff and patients stay safe, preserve personal protective equipment and patient care supplies, and expand available health system capacity.  This recommendation aligns with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Adult Elective Surgery and Procedures Recommendations, which states to limit all non-essential planned surgeries and procedures, including dental, until further notice.”

We are aware many states are preparing to reopen the economy, including some dental offices, as early as this week. We know that access to appropriate PPE is a significant concern for the dental hygiene community. We need to unite and ensure our governors step up to support dental hygienists and ensure their access to appropriate PPE should their employer dental offices reopen. In order to protect the dental team and patients, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) continues to support the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) in recommending dental facilities postpone elective procedures, surgeries, and non-urgent dental visits, and prioritize urgent and emergency visits and procedures now and for the coming several weeks

Governors need to hear your concerns about returning to work.

Hello Potential Certified Public Health Dental Hygienists,

As you may have read, the PHDH training criteria has several mandatory topics along with specific required continuing education hours.  Our plan is to prepare an informational webinar providing clear information for those interested in pursuing the PHDH certification.  For now, “self-study” courses are available on the American Dental Hygienists’ Association website.   After August 15, ADHA will launch its new learning management system which will also provide relevant classes.  Other options are to attend the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Association Conference (https://www.cezoom.com/events/?conf=399) or Wisconsin’s INDIGO (https://www.cezoom.com/events/?conf=374) – both scheduled on October 4-5, 2019.  We will rely on interest to determine the schedule of the eight-hour review, exam and presentation of certificate (as mandated by the Illinois Dental Practice Act).   Here’s a few classes to get started.  Remember to meticulously retain your records regarding documentation related to the PHDH.
