April 18, 2007 was IDHA’s Lobby Day. Hygienists Kimberly Benkert, Becky
Bunge, Kathy Schleich, Carla Schils, Joy Markey, Becky Grill, Amy Andersen,
IDHA President Yvette Walker, IDHA President-elect Amy Kobilsek, and Gov.
Relations Committee Chair Wanda Hansen attended the event with Michelle Paul,
IFT lobbyist. Some of us were first time attendees, but several veterans were
present to mentor.
Our morning started with a light breakfast and issues briefing by Michelle
Paul at the IFT building. We discussed the important points to discuss with
Illinois Senators and Representatives regarding Bills SB1144/HB3599,
SB214,
HB1937/1938,
and HB1449.
Armed with handouts and goody bags, we walked over to the Stratton Building
to begin our mission talking with Representatives. We split into groups to
allow us to visit as many legislators as possible.
Participants met at around noon in the rotunda area 3rd floor for a picture before attending the start of the House of Representatives Session. After experiencing how session is conducted and being announced as attending, participants headed back to the IFT building for lunch and discussion of their experiences talking with legislators. Many legislators had questions regarding changes in scope of practice when discussing SB1144/HB3599. Some legislators had great ideas for next year’s try for the Medicaid bill if the bill stalls this year. Many Representatives weren’t aware of some of the concerns participants presented in regards to SB214; I believe some of their eyes were open to the vagueness and liability issues of SB214.
I hope all attendees had an informative and fun day. I hope all will share their experience with other hygienists and encourage their participation at next year’s Lobby Day. The more hygienists who participate in the legislative process, the more our voices will be heard and respected!
